I may be a little ahead of myself, but as the holidays approach, I find myself thinking about the year ahead and new things I’ve learned that have made my life just a bit more joyful and following my ideal career path more fun.
Every now and then, I read an author whose work resonates so strongly that I feel like I need to share it with everyone I know. Reconnecting with so many of you over the past year has reminded me how much insight and creativity exists in this incredible network. So, here’s something that’s been useful to me.
This year, I’ve been inspired by the work of Martha Beck, and I think her message might be a great companion for anyone looking to bring more joy into 2025—especially those navigating big life or career transitions.
If you’re not familiar with her, Martha Beck is a renowned life coach, sociologist, and author who blends psychology, spirituality, and practical advice. (She’s got a Ph.D. from Harvard, so you know she’s bringing the brainpower.) Her work is all about helping people align with their true selves, find purpose, and live authentically—something I think we all crave, especially during times of change.
I first discovered her through an interview on the Huberman Lab podcast (one of my very favorites), and her insights hit me like a bolt of clarity. Her core message for you career? Listen to your body and follow your joy. At first, I thought, “Sure, that sounds nice, but also… unrealistic.” But as I dug deeper, I realized there’s a lot of actual science behind it. For example, Research like Self-Determination Theory (SDT) shows that intrinsic motivation—doing what truly lights you up—leads to greater success, fulfillment, and well-being.
This message feels especially timely right now. Like many others I’ve spoken with, I’ve gone through my own career challenges this year. It’s been a time of uncertainty, rethinking priorities, and navigating a path forward in a world that seems to be changing faster than ever. Over the past couple of years, so many people in the tech industry have experienced layoffs, shifts, and upheaval, and I know many are still figuring out their next steps. Even for those with steady jobs, the rapid rise of AI and automation is reshaping everything, adding a new layer of uncertainty.
In times like these, tools that help us stay grounded and find clarity—like the ideas Martha Beck shares—are more important than ever. Her message is simple but transformative: you don’t have to have everything figured out. Just start by doing a little more of what you love (and maybe a little less of what you don’t). Even 10 minutes a day. Small, authentic steps can create momentum and open new paths.
If you’re new to her work, all of her books (and exercises) are incredibly helpful, but I’d recommend starting with Finding Your Own North Star or The Way to Integrity. There are both fantastic guides to uncovering your purpose and living more authentically. She also has a new book, Overcoming Anxiety, coming out soon, which I’m looking forward to reading.
Oh, and did I mention, she’s got a great sense of humor and is truly funny.
And no, I’m not secretly on Martha Beck’s payroll—just sharing something I’ve found meaningful, hoping it might resonate with others in this incredible community.
So, if you’re looking for some inspiration (or just need an excuse to slow down and breathe), I highly recommend cuddling up with one of her books over the holidays. They’ve been a real source of comfort for me, and they might even make a thoughtful gift for someone in your life who’s searching for their next chapter.
Here’s to a year of authentic joy and meaningful growth in 2025 for all of us!
